“Where did you go to get gas? Las Vegas?” Sunshine greeted me when I arrived back at the house three hours later.

“If I’d driven all the way to Las Vegas, I wouldn’t be back yet,” I replied and dropped the ball of key chains into her outstretched hand.

“True. Did you make a pit stop?”

I blushed, and she pounced as soon as she realized something was going on. “Ha, I knew it. What happened?”

“Nothing. And as much as I enjoy conversations with you these days, I have to work. Something you should be doing right now. Why aren’t you at work?”

“It’s my day off since I have to work this weekend. And I should really do some laundry. I have nothing left to wear. Had to put on one of the latex tops we stole from your parents.”

Sunshine lifted the sides of her jacket and revealed the tight black top we stole when we needed a costume for Halloween.

I cringed at the shiny material. “Just as shiny as I remember. And it still looks better on you than it should. You’re lucky it’s not hot today or you’d be sweating up a river under there.”

She scrunched her nose. “Yuck, that’s just gross, Maize. Now, if you insist on being secretive, I’ll do some laundry.”

I waved at her and made my way up the stairs. “Have fun. Try not to set the dryer on fire again.”

“That was one time. And how was I supposed to know you’re meant to clean the lint filter?”

I grinned and called out, “I don’t know, maybe the big red light blinking in your face telling you to change the filter should have given you a hint.”

“Nobody likes a know-it-all,” she called after me.

I disappeared into my room and sat down at my rickety desk, checking my orders. I started an online shop during my last semester in college, selling clothes I designed and made. It had really taken off in the last few months, and I now made enough to stop having to ask my parents for rent money.

And hopefully once I opened my shop in town, things would pick up even more. I just had to find suitable premises first.

Instead of sneaking another look at the local real estate listings, I worked on my orders. The first dress I had to make was a yellow midi summer one with big pockets on the sides. It had thin straps and was fitted through the bodice, flowing in soft waves down to just past the knees. Buttons ran down the front, and it had a zipper down the side to make it easy to put on and take off. The design was one of my most ordered, and I offered different variations. The pockets—a signature on all my dresses—were decorated with a tiny butterfly made out of crystals.

Using a similar design meant I knew how to make it in my sleep. It saved me time, and I could make a few dresses a day without having to pause all the time and study designs.
